How to set up an ergonomic workspace at home?

Do you know what ergonomics is ?

Ergonomics is a posture, and in this case an ergonomic installation means one that respects your own body ergonomics.

Marketing would have us believe that ergonomics could be found in objects, but this is not entirely true.
You can have the best ergonomic chair in the world if you're slumped in it, but it's clearly not going to promote your well-being.

That's why being aware of your posture when you're working is essential.
You're going to have to try a few different postures to finally find the one that allows you to be productive without any pain at the end of the day.

What are the rules ?

If you work at a desk for more than 8 hours a day, you need to be aware of your posture to ensure your comfort.

First of all, you need to identify whether at the end of the day you feel pain such as pins and needles in your shoulders, a stiff neck or heavy legs.

This will tell you where the problem lies.

For example, if we take the problem of a stiff neck and consider that you are working on a laptop with no other equipment.

In this case, your head will be tilted at 45° for long periods.
A 45° tilt, as shown in the diagram below, adds an extra 22kg of weight to your cervical vertebrae.
In the long term, this poor posture will lead to neck pain, shortening of the pectoral muscles and, finally, lengthening of the back muscles.

There are some fairly easy solutions to this problem.

First of all, you'll need to raise your laptop, either on a special stand or simply with a stack of books. The screen will need to be at eye level without having to tilt your head.
You won't be able to use your keyboard or mouse, which will be too high, so it's a good idea to invest in an extra keyboard and mouse.
Your view will therefore be at the right height for a neutral tilt.

What is the long term impact of poor ergonomics on your health?

The impact on health of poor ergonomics at work is not felt immediately.

That's why most of us think that the investment is superfluous.

It's only when your pain becomes recurrent and chronic that it's unfortunately too late for your health.

The effort it will take to reduce or even correct these bad habits will cost you more financially and physically than if you decide to act now.

Health is a precious commodity, and our body is a fantastic piece of machinery that breaks down through repetitive strain.

Good habits will give you rapid relief and make you much more productive, so it's important to take care of yourself.

If you suffer from chronic pain and your installation leaves something to be desired, get in touch to discuss how to improve it.
